Well after a day of being leak the amazing little convertible that is the Audi A3 Cabriolet has made official by the guys in Germany and also will be making its officially debut in Germany at the IAA 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Compact Luxury market it hot right now and as we talk about before everyone is rushing to come out with there compact luxury both from the sedan market and the CUV market. This A3 Cabriolet will be the first in the A3 Range to offer Audi’s Legendary Quattro AWD system. Audi also plans to release the S3 Cabriolet which will complete the A3 Range. Which officially would includes the A3 Sedan; Hatchback and Cabriolet; the S3 Sedan and Cabriolet , once that is launch the A3 completes range will go up against the CLA sedan and the CLA AMG sedan from Mercedes Benz. Lexus and BMW hasn’t yet join this luxury lower end market, here in the states; however BMW do offered a completes line up with the 1 and 2 series overseas; we do however think that BMW will eventually be bring the 1 and 2 series here in the states very soon; so this market could get crowed fast; where the likes of Acura ILX is also available with a much less price tag of that’s of Mercedes Benz CLA which can eventually run up to $50,000 with needed options like HD Radio . We here Infiniti also plans to join this market as well; which only leaves Lexus who only offers the CT in a hatch hybrid form. So the CLA- Class and A3 Rangers are truly very important for both Audi and Mercedes Benz!
The A3 Cabriolet will be launching with 3 all completely new engine choices: Two TFSI engines will be offered the 1.4 liters will produce 140HP and the 1.8 litres will push out around 180HP, while the 2.0 TDI develops 150HP; Audi stated that other engines will follow later on. Here is how Audi explained those new engines as well as the fuel economy!
On average, the three launch engines bring a fuel economy improvement of around 12 per cent compared with their closest equivalents in the previous A3 Cabriolet range, despite also making performance gains. The 1.4 TFSI with six-speed manual transmission, for example, powers the new car from 0 to 62mph in 9.1 seconds, yet also achieves a very healthy 56.5 mpg with CO2 emissions of 114 g/km. Also contributing to this efficiency is Audi cylinder on demand (COD) technology, which deactivates two of the engine’s cylinders in low load conditions.
The 1.8-litre TFSI is also a state-of-the art unit with an extensive package of high-end technologies, including dual injection into the combustion chambers and induction manifold. It is initially linked exclusively to a seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission, and where the Audi drive select vehicle dynamics system is fitted, it offers a free-wheeling function that further improves fuel economy. According to the combined cycle test it is capable of returning up to 48.7 mpg with CO2 emissions of 133g/km. Not surprisingly the manual transmission-equipped 2.0 TDI with 150PS remains the economy champion in the first phase of engines, offering combined fuel consumption of 67.3 mpg and CO2 emissions of 110g/km.
The Audi A3 Cabriolet has added to that elegant beauty that all Audi vehicle offers: it sure added some more point with the drop top roof; which goes down in a little over 18 seconds Audi stated. The A3 Cabo will also be launching with Audi connect with 4G/LTE high-speed internet connectivity; which is a system we love here at SMADEMEDIA! Audi also explained how they was able to come up with this sweet design apart from being inspired by the Audi A3 sedan and here is what they had to say:
To achieve its sleeker profile and provide the capacity for complete soft-top concealment when in open mode, the new compact class cabriolet has grown compared to the previous model: its length has increased from 4.24 to 4.42 metres, its wheelbase from 2.58 to 2.60 metres and its width from 1.77 to 1.79 metres. Only its height (1.41 metres) is down on its predecessor, by 15 millimeters. Luggage capacity has also grown by 60 litres (2.12 cubic ft), and access to that space has been improved.
Overall we think this little package along with the A3 Hatchback (which isn’t available in the US) and A3 Sedan is a winner for Audi; it’s certainly a vehicle i would purchase in this class if the CLA wasn’t being offered! but we think that the sedan back seat of the A3 will be a lot more pleasant to deal with if your an adult than the CLA; which Mercedes is calling a Coupe so we get that head banging couple roof like; also we don’t think that Mercedes Benz ill be offering a cabriolet version of the CLA; however it is something that could be possible in the future.
